Film: Good vs. Evil

  • How does film deal with these questions?
When I was younger, the way i distinguished good from evil was through looks. On television shows and movies for children and sometimes adults, the evil characters are portrayed as ugly or with something off. It's harder for children to judge whats on the inside so in movies such as The Little Mermaid for example, the evil woman is shown ugly on the outside for them to understand ugly on the inside.

This dose not happen solely in children's movies but also in movies for all audiences. In The Dark Knight, the evil characters such as the joker or the mob are portrayed as deformed and ugly. This in a sense makes it easier for someone to differentiate between good and evil and gives the two specific qualities. However, not every movie does this.

In some movies such as Watchmen , the characters were all heroes and it was up to the view to decide who the villain was. They had all killed in wars and out of them and were considered heroes so when a character in the end makes sure two countries don't turn against each other by killing more innocents, it isn't very easy to decide who is good and who is evil.

Movies seem to explore these themes and make the line between the two either very blurred or very clear.
